Cooking With The Islands’ Stars is Sanibel Community Association’s newest and biggest event; a fun-filled evening of community-cooking, eating, competition, entertainment, and music!

It is also the chief fundraising event for SCA’s Renovation Campaign and the newly christened Culinary Education Center of Sanibel. For those that may not know, The Sanibel Community Association is a 501(c)3 registered non-profit, benefiting the communities of Sanibel and Captiva Island, FL. And now, with our Chef lineup for Cooking With The Islands’ Stars officially announced, we will be doing a series (Meet The Chefs) of biographical articles to help our audience better know each cook before the event.

Here is the first: Chef Sharon Schuyler…

Everyone on the Island knows Sharon & her husband Dan Schuyler of Lily & Co. fame.  They are both huge supporters of many non-profits on the Island and are very pleased to be giving back to the Community House! They believe it is a special place ‘beloved by all’ and they take their obligation to give back very seriously …and besides, Sharon LOVES to cook; baking is one of her great joys! As a result she is so pleased to be sharing a special recipe with our community while doing what she loves!
Sharon grew up in Maryland, but spent summers in North Carolina visiting her Grandmother, who taught her to bake when she was only ten years old. Sharon provided various baked goodies to her three brothers who were always willing to be tasters. Sharon is pleased to honor her Grandmother by baking her delicious  “Jewish Apple Cake”  for Cooking with the Island Stars.

Dan and Sharon met in Maryland years ago via a dating service.  Details vary depending on which one you ask, but apparently Dan was owed dates in return for a tennis bracelet… and Sharon’s dad bought her a series of dates and however it happened, it resulted in a wonderful match. Both enjoy great food, travel, good music, and working hard!

Sharon and Dan left cold Maryland for Southwest Florida about twenty years ago after visiting the island for Sharon’s 40th Birthday; then returning to visit every year for five years. Their only jaunt off island resulted in them buying a home in Ft. Myers right after 9-11 in the midst of Tropical Storm Gabrielle.

Sharon was a medical administrator for over 35 years and Dan a jeweler; they had intended to keep working in Maryland and just vacation here.  One day Sharon met a physician on Lighthouse Beach who convinced her to apply for a job in the area and move here full time… the rest is history.

They both LOVE Sanibel and have never looked back!
